Chief Executive Officer - American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses (ASPAN)

THE ORGANIZATION

For more than forty years, the American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses (ASPAN) has worked to advance and support the unique specialty of perianesthesia nursing and is recognized as the leading organization for evidence-based perianesthesia nursing practice. Today, ASPAN represents the interests of approximately 100,000 nurses who specialize in preanesthesia and postanesthesia care, ambulatory surgery, and pain management, with 15,000 nurses joining as members. ASPAN provides its members with the latest in perianesthesia education, research, clinical practice expertise, standards, and advocacy.

The organization comprises a national office, along with 40 local Components covering all 50 states. ASPAN is governed by a 14-person national board of directors elected from the members; the CEO serves as an ex-officio member of the board. Each Component has its own elected board of directors from members in the Component. The national office in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, has twelve (12) employees supporting the members, with three (3) additional employees serving as editors of various publications. Revenue largely derives from membership dues, national conference fees for attendees and exhibitors, and publications, including a regularly-updated standards of practice book.

THE POSITION

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of ASPAN provides overall leadership for the organization. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the CEO will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for ASPAN’s staff, programs, expansion, and execution of its mission. The CEO is expected to have (attain) deep knowledge of the field, core programs, operations, and business plan, and is responsible for all administrative and program responsibilities outlined below and manages a staff of 15.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Key Responsibilities

Leadership and Vision

  • Develop and articulate a strategic vision for the organization in collaboration with the Board of Directors.

  • Inspire and align staff, Components, and members around the organization’s mission and strategic goals.

  • Serve as the primary spokesperson and ambassador for the organization.

Organizational Management

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the national office.

  • Ensure ongoing local programmatic excellence, rigorous program evaluation, and consistent quality of finance and administration, fundraising, communications, and systems.

  • Recommend timelines and resources needed to achieve the strategic goals; oversee implementation of the strategic plan.

  • Develop appropriate staffing plan to meet the current and ongoing needs of the organization and its members, and lead the recruitment, hiring, and onboarding of staff members as needed.

  • Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performing workplace culture.

  • Ensure effective systems to track progress and regularly evaluate program components, to measure successes that can be effectively communicated to the Board, members and other constituents.

Membership Engagement

  • Ensure the delivery of high-quality programs, services, and resources to support members in their professional growth.

  • Work with staff, Board, and Components to develop strategies for member recruitment, retention, and engagement.

  • Actively engage and energize ASPAN volunteers, Board members, committees, alumni, and members.

  • Deepen and refine all aspects of member communications to create a stronger Society.

Financial Oversight

  • Develop and manage ASPAN’s annual budget in partnership with the Board of Directors.

  • Ensure fiscal responsibility and accountability across all levels of the organization in accordance with fiscal policies established by the Board and complying with external fiscal controls such as generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).

  • Identify and pursue opportunities to diversify revenue streams, including partnerships, sponsorships, and grants.

  • Ensure the filing of all legal and regulatory documents and monitor compliance with relevant laws and regulations.

  • Review and approve contracts for services.

Governance and Board Relations

  • Collaborate with the Board of Directors to set strategic priorities and ensure effective governance.

  • Provide regular updates on organizational performance, challenges, and opportunities, including progress toward strategic and organizational objectives and priorities.

  • Collaborate actively with the ASPAN President to support the Board in fulfilling its fiduciary and governance responsibilities.

  • Serve on the Executive Board in collaboration with the ASPAN President, Vice President/President-elect, Secretary, and Treasurer.

  • Develop, maintain, and support a strong Board of Directors and serve as ex-officio member of each ASPAN committee.

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education: Advanced degree, preferably an MBA or other management degree.

  • Significant professional experience in leadership roles in nursing, healthcare, and/or nonprofit management.

  • Proven success in leading and managing a national or multi-state organization, with experience in supporting chapter-based structures and member-driven organizations preferred.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and operationalize strategies to substantially enhance organizational growth.

  • Unwavering commitment to quality programs and data-driven program evaluation.

  • Excellence in organizational management with the ability to coach staff, manage and develop high-performance teams, and establish and achieve strategic objectives.

  • Demonstrated financial acumen and experience with budgeting, revenue diversification, and financial management of substantial organizations.

  • Successful experience working with a board of directors and the ability to cultivate existing board member relationships and trust.

  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

  • Strong marketing, public relations, and fundraising experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders and cultures.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and a passionate communicator.

  • Excellent multidisciplinary project management skills.

  • Action-oriented, entrepreneurial, adaptable, and innovative approach to business planning.

  • Strong interpersonal skills; ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people.

    COMPENSATION

    This is a full-time, exempt, hybrid-remote position. The ASPAN Office is located at 90 Frontage Road, Cherry Hill, NJ 08034.

    Starting Salary Range: The starting salary range for the position is $130,000-150,000 depending on experience. Employees are fully covered for medical benefits. Dental and vision coverage are available. There are 10 paid holidays, 5 personal days, 5 sick days and 15 days of PTO.
